CHAPTER 6

Darcy

I spent the rest of my morning in a daze from lack of sleep and worrying myself sick, not to mention the sex with Eli. I could become a full-blown addict, and he would be my drug of choice.

God, what was I going to do, there was no way to avoid him, and I didn’t want that, anyway.

Monday was off to a rough start. There was a mariachi band playing a never-ending encore inside my head, leading to a pounding headache. Could this day just hurry up and be over?

Oh, wait, after work, I had to deal with ‘the guy’ that my dad had high hopes that we would connect. Mr. William Collins, even his name, sounded like some disease. Why my dad did these crazy things was beyond insane. I told him that I was content with my job and my current non-relationship status. Of course, he was always right, and to some degree, that was true, but not in this case.

Charlee tapped on my open door and walked in, “I heard about Austen, thank God he’s okay.” She sat down in the chair in front of my desk and placed a coffee down on a coaster. “I didn’t think you had your liquid love yet,” she smiled.

“No, I haven’t. Thanks, Charlee, I am so exhausted. All I want to do is go home and pass out, but my place is full of men right now.” She waggled her eyebrows at me, “Oh no, don’t start.”

“So, is Loverboy going to be there?” she asked. Yes, Charlee knew damn well what the answer was. “Maybe he could relieve some tension.”

“Oh my God,” I gasped and plopped my head on my desk.

“Ah, what are you not telling me something, Darcy?” She waggled her brows and smiled, “Come on, tell Charlee what's going on so she can help you.” I shook my head without looking up, “Did you two… ” and my aunt cut her off.

“Charlee, don’t you have work to do,” she stated, “Please leave.” To which, Charlee jumped up and exited my office. “Now, Darcy, are you feeling okay? If you think you should leave early, I won’t hold it against you. I spoke with your father, and he told me about Austen,” she sighed. “Good heavens, is that boy ever going to grow up? After all, he’s not a child anymore,” she ranted on about my brother for what seemed like forever. If she had been anyone else, I would have lost it on her.

“I think I should go home, thanks, Aunt Catherine,” I stammered while holding my tears at bay. “It’s been a stressful few days, and I haven’t had much sleep.” She nodded her approval, “I should be fine to work tomorrow.”

I messaged Charlee to let her know I was leaving when I was at the elevator. When the doors opened, I almost careened into Eli.

“Hi, Darc,” he smiled and placed a hand on my arm. “Are you leaving for the day?” The concern in his eyes was evident, but if I continued to talk to him, I knew I would fall back into his arms.
